Scott Tallon Walker and Edward Williams win planning for cancer centre

[FIRST LOOK + PROJECT DATA] Camden Council has given planning permission for a new cancer care and proton beam therapy unit for University College London Hospitals

Emerging practice Edward Williams Architects has worked in collaboration with Scott Tallon Walker Architects to design the 36,500m² building on the corner of Tottenham Court Road and Grafton Way in central London.

The centre is expected to start on site in spring 2015, with completion due in 2018.

The architect’s view

‘The main building perimeter completes the urban block in which it sits and is arranged around an L-shaped full height atrium that separates it from a lower central courtyard building and brings daylight into the heart of the building.

‘The building consists of a series of elegant bays in elevation that relate directly to the roofscape; the use of ceramic rods for the external shading and screening elements along with clear, un-tinted glass and with user control of the sun shades themselves creates an elegant and sophisticated composition that responds to the daily rhythm of the buildings use.

‘The ground level is colonnaded and glazed which allows for an active street frontage and encourages visual and physical connections to the street.

‘The reduced height central courtyard building provides roof gardens for use as does the roof of the atrium and this creates a stepped series of south facing gardens in the centre of the urban black.’

  • Interesting to see the result of a collaboration between a large established practice like Scott Tallon Walker and a new up-and-coming practice like Edward Williams Architects. Here the collaboration is called an 'association' - but I wonder who has done what to get this large complex project successfully though planning.

Clients often favour teams of 2 or 3 architects on risky projects to 'cover all bases.; but for the architects it can be a complicated 'marriage of convenience'; and for all it usually a 'learning experience'.

I look forward to seeing which architect has gained the client's confidence to take leadership of the project as design development and construction phases start.
