RIBA reveals longlist for 2017 House of the Year

  • Comment

Homes by Coffey Architects, Tonkin Liu and Carmody Groarke have been named on the longlist for the 2017 RIBA House of the Year Award

The 20-strong longlist also features Richard Meier’s first house in the UK, the Oxfordshire Residence; 31/44 Architects’ No 49; and Hayhurst and Co’s Whole House.

Other schemes vying for the title include a cork-clad home in Essex by Lisa Shell Architects with Marcus Taylor; a treehouse in Dorset by Brownlie Ernst and Marks; and Caring Wood, a large country home in Kent by Macdonald Wright Architects with Rural Office for Architecture.

In addition, three schemes recently shortlisted for the RIAS 2017 Awards have made the cut. They are: Ann Nisbet Studio’s Newhouse of Auchengee, in Ayrshire; A449 Architects’ Edinburgh Road, in Musselburgh; and Scampton and Barnett Architects’ Fernaig Cottage, in Wester Ross.

Schemes by Sandy Rendel Architects; Chris Dyson Architects; BHSF Architekten with Studio-P; MawsonKerr Architects; Birds Portchmouth Russum Architects; David Sheppard Architects; Mike Keys and Anne Claxton and Ström Architects complete the longlist.

The RIBA House of the Year is described by the institute as ‘the UK’s most prestigious award for a new house or extension’. Last year the award was won by Richard Murphy’s own house in Edinburgh, which RIBA president Jane Duncan said was ‘part jigsaw puzzle and part Wallace and Gromit’.

The shortlist will be announced later this year.
