RIBA reveals Brighton in-fills longlist

  • Comment

John Pardey, Konishi Gaffney and Sutherland Hussey Harris are among 20 practices longlisted in a RIBA-run contest for a series of ‘challenging’ residential sites in Brighton

Other finalists in the Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC)-backed competition include Citizens Design Bureau, Felix & Merlin and local firm Sam Willoughby Architects (full list below).

Launched last March, the contest sought proposals for four urban plots constrained by their ‘size, context, overlooking issues and/or restricted access.’

The sites – which are being redevelopment as part of BHCC’s ‘New Homes for Neighbourhoods’ programme – included former garages and car parks at Hinton Close, Rotherfield Crescent and Natal Road.

A car park in Frederick Street – close to the iconic North Laine market – was also included.

Councilor Anne Meadows, chair of BHCC’s Estate Regeneration Programme Board, BHCC, commented: ‘We are delighted with the response we have had to the competition from architectural practices, which was a staggering 146 submissions submitted by 70 registered practices.’

She continued: ‘It is a very exciting project which I hope will deliver creative solutions for some of our smaller development sites. If the competition pilot is successful, we will be using it to bring forward other smaller sites from the New Homes for Neighbourhoods programme.’

Preferred schemes have already been identified for each site. The designers behind those concepts will present their worked-up designs to the judging panel in mid-March.

Following this meeting – where the architects ’must demonstrate the viability of their proposals and the assembly of a delivery team’ – the winners will be announced.
