RIBA North West names nine-strong shortlist for regional awards

  • Comment

A Maggie’s Centre by last year’s Stirling Prize-winning practice dRMM is among nine projects shortlisted for RIBA North West’s regional awards

The cancer care centre in Oldham is joined by AHMM’s Royal Court theatre in Liverpool – winner of the 2016 AJ Retrofit Awards – which also made last year’s shortlist but subsequently failed to pick up any RIBA honours.

The list is completed by buildings from BDP, Buttress, Flanagan Lawrence, Bennetts Associates with Ellis Williams Architects, Hawkins\Brown, Cartwright Pickard and emerging Liverpool-based design studio Architectural Emporium.

RIBA North West regional director Andrew Ruffler said: ‘Once again it seems that the bar in the North West has been raised, and we congratulate all of the shortlisted practices in what was another competitive selection process.

‘Each of the shortlisted buildings, which span a range of locations, uses and sizes, have elements which elevate them above the ordinary, and it is fantastic to see that a number of North West-based practices have been involved in their design and delivery.’

However Ruffler added that the jury had not been able to put forward any scheme capable of winning the region’s special small projects category.

‘For the second year in succession, the region has been unable to shortlist a building which would qualify for the North West’s Small Project Award,’ he said, ‘and it is a future challenge to rectify this by identifying and celebrating those innovative projects which have been delivered on a tight budget.’

The winners of the regional awards will be announced in Liverpool on Wednesday 16 May.

These regional winners will then be considered for the RIBA National Awards, with the successful recipients announced in July. Those collecting national awards will then be put forward for the RIBA Stirling Prize.
