RIBA moots ‘test of time’ award

The RIBA is considering introducing an award for in-use performance

Peter Clegg, chair of the RIBA Awards jury, announced at the British Architecture Now event last night that the RIBA is currently in discussion about whether to introduce a ‘test of time’ award.

The award would look at buildings 10 years after completion assessing their sustainability performance in-use, the robustness of materials, and how users inhabit the building.

The current RIBA awards require a sustainability statement as part of every awards submission. Buildings submitted for the awards are usually less than a year old and actual energy use data is not often available, making it difficult to judge a building on its performance.

Clegg said: ‘Because the buildings are generally less than a year old, they rarely have actual performance metrics, so we must rely on predicted design data.

‘Year on year we find more sophisticated sets of figures and written statements [in the RIBA Awards submissions]. It is also becoming easier to distinguish the greenwash from those submissions that have a serious grasp of the issues’.

Details of the award are yet to be confirmed.

This is a really great idea. I would also like such a judging process to include a post occupancy evaluation to asses the subjective experience of the building's users. A successful building as to be delivering a good user experience not just a set of numbers and a nice visual appearance.
