RIBA Awards 2013 announced

The AJ can exclusively reveal all 137 of the RIBA national, regional EU and international award winners

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios has bagged an outstanding haul of awards, taking home five gongs for its buildings including national honours for its MMU Business school in Manchester, its Chedworth Roman Villa visitor centre in the Cotswolds and its £40 million gold-skinned Hive library and history centre in Worcester.

AHMM also hit the jackpot with four of its schemes - the practice’s North London Hospice and its Kingswood Academy in Hull picking up national awards. Meanwhile three of Foster + Partners’s buildings were recognised by the RIBA judges and the AJ100 top-ranked company scooped international awards for its Central Market Souk in Abu Dhabi and its Aleph apartment block in Argentina.

However the overall number of awards handed out fell by nearly a fifth from last year when 174 projects won national, regional EU and international honours.

Surprisingly there were no national awards given to buildings in either Wales or the East Midlands with the London region again taking home the lion’s share of the wins - 31 accolades including 13 national awards.

Education and homes were the most successful sectors - housing projects won 29 regional and national awards and schools bagged a combined total of 24 honours.

The national winners will now be considered for the 2013 Stirling Prize - the biggest prize in UK architecture. A shortlist will be announced on 18 July and the victor named at a celebratory party at Central St Martins in London on 29 September.
