Revealed: Winners of RIBA North West Regional Awards

  • Comment

Schemes by John McAslan, Carmody Groarke and MUMA are among the eight winners of RIBA North West Regional Awards 2015

Chosen from a shortlist of 15, the victorious projects also include a ‘geometrically rigorous modernist villa’ by ShedKM, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios’ ‘lively and well-conceived’ Manchester Metropolitan University Student Union, and John McAslan + Partners’ (JMP) Lancaster University Engineering Building which the judges praised for its ‘careful detailing, strategy and quality’.

The Lancaster scheme also won its architect, JMP associate Paul Hughes, the region’s Project Architect of the Year Award.

The North West’s top accolade – the Building of the Year Award – went to MUMA’s reworking of the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester, which the judges said was of an ‘international standard’.

Carmody Groarke’s AJ Small Projects Award-winning temporary Maggie’s Centre in Merseyside received yet another gong, picking up the region’s own Small Projects accolade.

Dave King, RIBA North West regional jury chair, said: ‘[These] awards showcase a diverse range of buildings; from small to large, temporary to permanent, education to corporate and large-scale housing to private residences of exceptional quality.

‘The judges moved from a small-scale Maggie’s Centre contrived partly from ‘found’ elements, to a massive addition to Liverpool’s iconic Pier Head. Two suburban houses - both designed in-part to house artworks - contrast dramatically with an elegant and inclusive gallery extension overlooking a city-centre park.

‘A lively and colourful school is complimented by a student’s union and an engineering faculty, each having their own particular set of qualities.’
