Revealed: winner of latest Hackney council housing job

  • Comment

An up-and-coming practice run by two former David Chipperfield architects has been appointed to design 10 new homes as part of Hackney Council’s emergent social housing drive

Hackney-based Al-Jawad Pike, set up by Dean Pike and Jessam Al-Jawad in 2014, is the third studio to be chosen by the east London borough for its Housing Supply Programme.

The initiative aims to build more than 400 homes – 70 per cent of which will be for social rent and shared ownership – on 11 infill sites. Al-Jawad Pike’s scheme will replace disused garages in Mandeville Street, Clapton.

Earlier this month, Housing Design Awards champion Ash Sakula won a Hackney Council competition to design 17 homes for the programme, on a site containing a disused incinerator. In November Surman Weston won the programme’s first commission, landing a project to design 16 micro-flats, which reconfigures existing spaces inside Gooch House, an ageing tower block.

Speaking about the Mandeville Street scheme, Pike said: ‘The site’s unusual shape is governed by a set of unique boundary conditions, sandwiched  between the Grade-II listed Mandeville Primary School and a sequence of fragmented mid-century terraced houses.

‘Our aim is to restitch the site with its surroundings by introducing a new pedestrian thoroughfare that will contribute to the reactivation of the public realm, while providing a clear delineation of public and private space. The development will form a townhouse block and mews, unified by their brick materiality and base.’

Plans for the Mandeville Street scheme are expected to be submitted in August this year.
