Revealed: Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’ designs for Melbourne Metro stations

Designs for five new stations on the Melbourne underground, drawn up by a team which includes Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, have been revealed today

Working with HASSELL and Weston Williamson + Partners, the practice has helped design North Melbourne, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac stations as part of the AUS$11 billion (£6.23 billion) Melbourne Metro Tunnel project.

The architects were engaged by the Lendlease-led Cross Yarra Partnership, which was named as the preferred bidder for the scheme – billed as ’one of the biggest public transport projects in Victoria’s history’ – in July 2017.

Lendlease is also working with John Holland, Bouygues Construction and Capella Capital on the new 9km twin-tunnel Metro link.

According to the Victorian government the designs for the stations will ‘combine functionality, space and natural light with the latest in public transport infrastructure design’.

Minister for public transport Jacinta Allan said: ’[These] new underground train stations will deliver the best passenger experience in stunningly designed and spacious settings.’

‘The Metro Tunnel will deliver five new architectural landmarks for Melbourne and the turn-up-and-go train system our city needs.’

  • North Melbourne Station will have a large-scale brick arched entrance to ’reflect the area’s industrial heritage’ and skylights, allowing natural light to filter down on the platforms and concourse
  • Parkville features a glass roof at the Grattan Street entrance opening onto a tree-lined precinct
  • State Library and Town Hall Stations in the heart of the central business district will have ’redesigned laneways including cafés and shops’ with spacious platforms ‘framed by sweeping arches’
  • Anzac Station in Domain will have a major canopy ’reaching up from below-ground’.

The cross-city project is backed by the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority, which has retained Grimshaw as its client-side architect.

The AJ100 practice drew up the original ‘reference design’ for the five stations (under the previous working titles Arden, Parkville, CBD North and South, and Domain). Grimshaw described the Metro link as a ‘critical city-shaping project that allows for the expansion of Melbourne’s rail network and increased services to the city’s growth areas in the north, west and south-east.’
