Revealed: RIBA Yorkshire Awards shortlist

A Sheffield office by Hodder + Partners, ACME’s new Leeds shopping centre and De Matos Ryan’s revamp of York Theatre Royal are among 13 buildings shortlisted for this year’s RIBA Yorkshire Awards

Other projects in the running include Simpson & Brown’s Rievaulx Abbey Visitor Centre and Museum revamp, a BDP-designed biomass plant, office accommodation by DLA Design and COG Architecture’s conversion of a Grade II-listed malting building.

Projects by Thomas Ford & Partners, Studio Partington, GT3 Architects, Tanglewood, Mass Architecture and Tom Brooksbank Architecture complete the list.

A judging panel will visit the shortlisted buildings this month, with the winners announced at the RIBA Yorkshire Awards on 25 May at Früit in Hull.

Regional winners will be considered for the RIBA National awards. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National award-winning buildings.

Vijay Taheem, chair of the Yorkshire judging panel, said assessors were impressed with the quality of submissions: ‘Our region received many excellent entries, and all very worthy of consideration in many aspects.

’The shortlisting presented lively discussions and debates, and those shortlisted are considered to embrace a holistic contribution to all aspects of the design in creating excellence towards our architectural heritage.’

This office building marks the completion of the commercial components of the Heart of the City masterplan on a site formerly occupied in part by the 1970s extension to the Grade I-listed town hall.

A biomass power plant adjacent to the M1 in Sheffield, E.ON’s facility is on the site of the former iconic Tinsley cooling towers.

Central Square, Leeds by DLA Design

Central Square provides office accommodation on 10 floor levels above a mixed-use ground floor winter garden and two levels of basement parking.

This conversion of a Grade II-listed malting building into six two and three-bedroom houses had to address challenges such as an unstable structure and the retention of original malting equipment.

Cunelands House, Malton by Tom Brooksbank Architecture

Started in 2012, the project for the architect’s parents took three years to complete – including 12 months for construction. The site for Cunelands House was consolidated from two semi-detached cottages plus their associated wash-houses and a neighbouring walled ‘kitchen-garden.’ The brief called for a home with a master bedroom on the ground floor, strong connections to the garden and landscape as well as the emulation of key details in the family home from which they have now ‘down-sized.’

This urban extension of 64 new homes of an eventual 540 for the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust aims to provide both a socially and environmentally sustainable large-scale mixed tenure community.

Regenerating and restoring a former hospital site at the northern end of Northallerton High Street, the mixed-use scheme includes a 10,000 sq ft food store and a bar/restaurant.

The most significant element of this project to improve visitor and staff facilities and provide an upgraded museum building, is the insertion of a new central hall within the existing L-shaped plan.

A simple C-shaped building makes efficient use of limited space to provide a new retail unit and seven unisex public toilets.

A new extension at an Edwardian property, replacing a previous extension, accommodates an open-plan kitchen, living area and library with an improved connection to the large south-facing garden.

Located at the east end of the city centre, the scheme includes a new John Lewis department store, multi-storey car parking and two arcades with a mix of premium shops, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Thomas Ford & Partners responded to a brief to repair and adapt the building sympathetically to provide inclusive access for diverse liturgical and community activities that would place the cathedral at the heart of city life.

The £4 million redevelopment of the Grade-II* listed building has created additional space, including two new lobbied entrances and a foyer, that the theatre needed in order to appeal to and engage a wider community.
