Revealed: RIAS 2016 Awards shortlist

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has revealed the projects in the running for its 2016 awards

The 23-strong shortlist includes a £3.8 million food factory by Taylor Architecture Practice, Collective Architecture’s library revamp, and a primary school by Walters & Cohen.

Also in the running for the annual awards are Studio Weave’s zinc-clad Midden Studio, a 121-home village extension by Proctor and Matthews, and BTE Architecture’s Pyramid Viewpoint which was a finalist in the AJ Small Projects Awards.

Reiach and Hall has two projects on the shortlist – a health centre in East Kilbride and the City of Glasgow College’s Riverside Campus which it completed with Michael Laird Architects. Last year the Edinburgh-based practice was shortlisted for the coveted Stirling Prize for its Lanarkshire Maggie’s Centre.

Willie Watt, President of the RIAS, commented on the shortlist: ‘It seems appropriate, in this RIAS Centenary year, that we have such a strong and diverse shortlist. While fees and procurement continue to challenge all of us our awards celebrate the very best that is being built in Scotland.

‘This is a tremendous list which goes in scale from a small house extension/reconfiguration to major education provision. Geographically although, unusually, there are no Island visits, we will travel from a factory in Dumfriesshire to a lookout tower in Sutherland. This is a list that fully demonstrates the privilege of living in our magnificent wee country and just how architects have embraced the responsibility that brings with it.’

The judging panel for this year, chaired by Watt, also includes Denise Bennetts, Alan Jones, Andy Leitch of the Forestry Commission Scotland and Stuart McKill from Saint-Gobain.

The winning schemes will go on to be eligible for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award and the RIBA Stirling Prize.

  • Nice collection of project.
I believe though number 1 on the list is in Glasgow, rather than Edinburgh
