Stanton Williams and Rodney Melville’s Berrow Foundation Building and New Garden Building in Oxford has been crowned RIBA South Building of the Year
The scheme was one of nine winners at the RIBA South Awards, which also included Wright & Wright’s library for Magdalen College at the University of Oxford; AHMM’s Barns Road housing scheme in Oxford; and Richard Meier’s first house in the UK with Berman Guedes Stretton and Roger Stretton
The other winners were Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios’ Bedales School Art and Design Building in Petersfield, Hampshire, which picked up four awards in total (see below); Design Engine’s Winton Chapel for the University of Winchester; Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt’s community centre The Point in Tadley, Hampshire; Acanthus Clews Architects’ Warwick Hall Community Centre in Burford, Oxfordshire; and Adrian James Architects’ private house called Incurvo in Goring, Oxfordshire.
Basingstoke-based Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt also won Emerging Practice of the Year.
RIBA South jury chair Rupert Cook said: ‘This year’s RIBA Awards shortlist gave insight into the range of buildings being commissioned and designed, from small to big budget. We witnessed exceptional quality, creating buildings that will endure.
‘There were notable differences between clients’ approaches to the “building arms race”. Rather than join this race, some chose careful budget setting and brief development, which could ensure the creation of the new buildings that were not just about the money, with building’s potential being a lesson in the “economy of means” – taking sustainability to the heart of the brief.’
All the winning buildings will now go on to be considered for national honours, with the successful projects revealed in June. The six finalists for the 2017 RIBA Stirling Prize will be drawn from these national winners.

Unfortunately the belief that the architectural application of supergraphics sideways is somehow clever is not yet dead, but was it really necessary to bastardise the illuminated cross on the extension to Winton Chapel?
