Revealed: huge shortlist for 2017 RIBA East Awards

  • Comment

A record 31 projects have been shortlisted for this year’s RIBA East regional awards

Last year the institute chose 25 finalists – itself a record – in the region, which covers Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Buildings by Bell Phillips Architects, 5th Studio, Adam Khan Architects, Cowper Griffiths and Eric Parry Architects were selected from a massive 62 entries.

The finalists including a drawing studio on stilts, the conversion of a derelict windmill into a holiday home, a Buddhist retreat and a clutch of new housing schemes.

FAT’s swansong project, the House for Essex in Wrabness, which controversially missed out on a regional award last year, was not resubmitted for consideration.

Nicolas Tye, chairman of RIBA East, and a past RIBA Awards judge said: ‘We’ve had an amazing response to the call for award entries this year, and it’s really great to see clients pushing for good design across such a broad spectrum, from schools and religious buildings through to housing schemes and one-off homes.

‘All the architecture practices and their clients are to be congratulated for getting this far. The jury has a difficult task on its hands.’

The winning buildings will be announced at an awards ceremony on Thursday 18 May at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

These will be put forward for the RIBA National Awards, with the recipients announced in July. Those collecting national awards will then be considered for the 2017 RIBA Stirling Prize.
