3DReid, Bennetts Associates, Woods Bagot, Scott Brownrigg and Fielden & Mawson have all received gongs in this year’s BREEAM Awards

The Co-operative Group’s headquarters, One Angel Square, in Manchester designed by 3DReid won the best office building accolade. The BREEAM Outstanding building is expected to cut the client’s energy bills by £500,000 per year.

Intriguingly the Prime Minister’s residence at Number 10 Downing Street, which was originally three houses, picked up the special award for Most Improved BREEAM In-use Project.

Aedas was recognised as the architecture practice with the greatest number of certified BREEAM assessments in 2012.

Since 1998,16,000 BREEAM projects have been certified. The awards which recognise the highest scoring buildings certified in 2012 were announced at Ecobuild today (05 March).

All of the award-winning buildings achieved at least an ‘Excellent’ rating, which requires a BREEAM score of more than 70 per cent.

Richard Hardy, managing director of BRE Global said: ‘The level of performance of today’s buildings is much higher than before. For example, the average number of credits awarded for reduction of emissions in all BREEAM assessed buildings is 15 per cent higher than a year ago.

‘The greater efficiency and quality associated with sustainability is also helping to make such buildings more commercially successful. There is growing evidence that BREEAM-rated buildings provide increased rates of return for investors, and increased rental rates and sales premiums for developers and owners.’
