Axis Architecture, which took on the scheme from Broadway Malyan last year, has already submitted a revised planning application to increase the height of the main 22-storey, 263-flat skyscraper up to 36 floors.
Now the practice wants to convert the development into a twin-tower project by adding a second building next to the proposed 108m-tall centrepiece.
This is despite that fact that work is well under way on the original tower and construction has, according to reports, reached the ‘consented’ 22 storeys.
However it is understood the foundations have been designed to take a much taller building and the practice, which is working for Velocity Estates, is hoping Sheffield City Council will allow them to grow the tower skywards to include a new aparthotel and skybar.
Debbie Hoare from Axis Architecture sad: ‘[When] Velocity Estates acquired the site in 2007, an overhaul of the original scheme was needed to update the design aesthetic.
‘From the very early days of the project we always had the intention to propose an increase in the height of the tower and amend the massing of the scheme.
She added: ‘To maintain its proportions, and truly be viewed as a tower, the new proposals depress the central wing building detaching the main tower physically down to lower levels. An increase at the far end of the wing in turn creates a second subservient tower.
