According to the latest RIBA Future Trends survey practices are finding it increasingly difficult to find staff

Practices have reported the lowest ever recorded under-employment figures for architects despite a drop off in workloads.

RIBA director of practice Adrian Dobson said: ‘We are beginning to see the first real evidence of practices encountering difficulties in attracting new staff with the right mix of skills and experience.

He added: ‘This seems to be a countrywide phenomenon.’

Just 12 per cent of architects reported being under-employed – the lowest figure since the RIBA began the survey in 2009.

According to the RIBA this shows most of the spare capacity retained within the profession during the recession is now being productively employed.

Practices’ employment expectations are also optimistic with the RIBA Future Trends Staffing Index for November reporting +11 – far from the dismal -2 of November 2012.

Medium and large-sized practices continue to be more confident about their ability to sustain higher staffing levels in the medium term.

Just four per cent of practices expect to have to reduce staff numbers in the next quarter.

Recovery from the recession remains steady with the Workload Index continuing positively despite a fall of eight points from October’s spike to +29.

Housing continues to be the strongest sector with a Workload Index figure of +26, while commercial workloads have risen to +20.  Practices have seen little growth in both the public and community sectors.

Regional figures were positive nationwide, with Northern Ireland and the north of England enjoying the highest workloads of +50 and +49 respectively.
