Populous has revealed its designs for the Qualcomm Stadium site in Mission Valley, San Diego
The practice was commissioned to design the 68,000-seat stadium just six weeks ago.
The new stadium will replace American football team The San Diego Chargers’ existing home, which will be demolished at the end of the 2019 season.
The ‘Super Bowl-ready’ scheme includes landscaped promenades and a fan park, corporate hospitality areas, locker rooms, four tunnels leading to the pitch, and hall of fame gallery and a VIP atrium.
It also features a ‘kinetic skin’ of metal plates which move when the wind blows mimicking the sound of the sea.
In a statement Populous, said: ‘The multipurpose stadium would be an asset to the city, capable of hosting professional and amateur sports, entertainment, cultural and commercial events at a modern, vibrant sports and entertainment centre.
‘The new stadium would celebrate the city of San Diego, incorporating ocean and harbour influences with a forward-looking green design.’
