Populous scoops planning for Belfast stadium

Populous has won planning for the redevelopment of Belfast’s Casement Park stadium

According to the architects behind the London 2012 Olympic stadium, the existing stadium will be revamped providing more accessible facilities, and an additional 2,000m2 of community space.

The redevelopment will introduce 2,000 corporate level seats and aims to secure additional major fixtures for the venue.

Designed around three elements, the building features a ‘plinth’ which responds to the surrounding residential and retail buildings, a ‘cloud’, constructed of translucent material, and a truss spanning 200m which will support the roof of the stadium.

Located on the Anderstown Road, the 32,500-seat stadium is one of the largest stadiums in the Ulster region, and hosts Gaelic football and hurling matches.

Mike Trice, principal at Populous, said: ‘The redevelopment of Casement Park represents an unprecedented opportunity to redevelop a major facility at the centre of the Ulster GAA. Our contemporary stadium design is sympathetic to the local environment and surroundings, whilst reflecting the history, ethos and commitment of Ulster GAA to promoting traditional Irish sports. We look forward to seeing this provincial stadium draw greater numbers of visitors to Northern Ireland to watch games and participate in conferences and community events, increasing participation in Gaelic Games and bringing local communities together.’

The stadium redevelopment forms part of the Northern Ireland Executive’s strategic stadium programme, and is set to compete in 2016 in time for the Ulster GAA Senior Championship Finals.
