Populous reveals new visions for Spurs megastadium

Populous has released the latest renders of its plans for a new 61,000-seat mega-stadium for Tottenham Hotspur FC

The new ground in north London features a retractable pitch to allow the club to host American football matches alongside a glass-walled tunnel which provides behind-the-scenes views of the players’ tunnel.

The Olympic Stadium designer will also create a 17,000-seat single tier stand, designed to generate a ‘wall of sound’.

The scheme at White Hart Lane includes a 180-bed hotel, megastore, cinema, café and a museum in the 1828 listed Warmington House.

The new ‘asymmetrical’ stadium features a façade created from a sculptural mesh which wraps around the building before it reaches the home end where a glass façade arches upwards.

Tottenham Hotspur brought in Populous in late 2013 to rethink architect KSS’ already-consented £400 million, 56,000-seat stadium scheme for the north London site. The Olympic stadium architect has already worked on a similar retractable pitch design at the Arizona Cardinals’ home stadium in Phoenix.

Daniel Levy, chairman of Tottenham Hotspur, said: ‘Our new stadium will redefine sports and entertainment experiences. We have travelled to some of the best venues in the world to ensure no stone is left unturned in order to deliver experiences that are unparalleled for all our visitors. It will provide the world-class facilities our players and fans deserve and bring much needed regeneration to the local area.’

When the new stadium opens in 2018 it is set to be London’s largest capacity football club.

  • This project has wrecked the continuity and character of Tottenham High Road. But I guess that's the price we had to pay in exchange for this huge investment.

Glad to see someone in one of the images at least, watching the game

  • It puzzles me why AJ always refer to this stadium as "mega". 61,000 is big, but there are quite a few bigger in London which did not get this grand title.

The proposed dense forest planting adjacent to the stadium look fabulous.
