Piercy&Co wins approval for glass-fronted Clerkenwell office scheme

Piercy&Co has won approval for this 4,050m² office scheme in Clerkenwell, London, featuring a large Crittal-window façade

According to the practice, the ‘finely gridded glazed wall’ on the front of the project in Gee Street was inspired by the glass used on local warehouse buildings and ‘the factory glazing of the International Style’.

The scheme will be built on the site of a car park and will house a ground-floor reception and shop, six floors of office space and around 200m² of space for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The project will connect,  via a shared circulation stair, to the neighbouring Harella House building, which is being refurbished under a scheme also masterminded by Piercy&Company.

Piercy&Company director Stuart Piercy said: ‘2 Gee Street has a fine-grained façade that disrupts the repetition of the typical commercial gridded office. The delicate lantern-like form will bring a more generous presence to this tight urban street.’

Architect’s view

The Gee Street elevation is a finely gridded glazed wall, inspired by the Crittal glass of local warehouse buildings and the factory glazing of the International Style. A subtle curved corner draws pedestrians into a landscaped courtyard formed between the gable end wall of Harella House and the new building.

A more solid, concrete frame and pink brick facade on the side elevation balances thermal requirements whilst referencing the exposed party walls found throughout Clerkenwell and Shoreditch. We were struck by the texture of these walls which carry the scars of war damage, demolition and the trace of missing buildings. As well as referencing these in the new concrete and brick façade, we have exposed the existing white brick gable end of the adjoining Harella House as an interior wall in 2 Gee Street.

Complex rights to light constraints necessitated a series of stepped terraces to the rear of the scheme. These softly landscaped areas provide four external amenity spaces for the office workers and help to reduce the perception of mass from the streetscape.

The internal spaces carry the warehouse industrial character of the Crittal façade inside and feature long span steelwork and exposed structural concrete soffits.
