Pickle beats cheese in battle of nicknames

  • Comment

The Gherkin has topped a poll of the best building nicknames. Foster + Partners’ Stirling Prize-winning tower saw off competition from the Walkie Talkie and the Cheesegrater in the YouGov poll.

More than 70 per cent of those surveyed said they had heard of the Gherkin, while RSHP’s Cheesegrater was second with 23 per cent nickname recognition.

Paul Heather, manager of Skanska, which commissioned the survey, said: ‘The Gherkin may be the most successful such nickname since Big Ben was completed in 1858.’

London’s tallest tower – the Shard – missed out on a spot in the rankings because its best-known nickname is also its official name.
