Piano’s Whitney Museum is in the bag

  • Comment

As his new $422 million Whitney Museum in New York opens to the public, Renzo Piano has joined the ever-growing list of architects trying their hand at fashion design.

Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry have both designed handbags inspired by their buildings, and now Piano has revealed the ‘Whitney bag’ for fashion house Max Mara.

The sold-out limited-edition bag mimics the shape of the building and features ribbed, slate-grey-coloured leather influenced by the museum’s steel facade.

Max Mara creative director Ian Griffiths told the New York press: ‘I just hope that in 20 years’ time, the bag is as much of an icon as this building’.
