Peter Cook’s CRAB Studio to start on Bournemouth innovation hub

An orange, jigsaw-like building designed by Peter Cook’s CRAB Studio, which will house space for emerging businesses in Bournemouth, is set to start on site

The north London practice’s 600m2 timber-framed Innovation Studio will get underway at the Arts University Bournemouth next month (November).

Planning consent was granted for the two-and-a-half-storey structure between the existing Workshop Building and University House at the end of last year.

The structure is designed to act as a catalyst for growth, providing a base for graduates as well as micro and small businesses to be supported by experts from local, national and international universities and industry.

The architectural concept comprises a series of ‘focus pads’ connected by a series of ramps to create a sense of independence and community. As well as distinct studio and office spaces, there will be workshops at ground level.

Cook Robotham Architectural Bureau (CRAB) was formed in 2006 after Archigram founder Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham co-curated the British Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Cook, an alumnus and visiting professor at the Arts University Bournemouth, has already built one structure at the institution: the blue monocoque Drawing Room, which was opened by Zaha Hadid in 2016 and was Cook’s first building to complete in the UK.

Describing the latest scheme, the practice said the Innovation Studio would ‘establish its own particular personality’ adding: ‘It is a sunny seaside building and a punctuation to the otherwise monochromatic blocks either side.’

Prefabricated cross-laminated timber panels will be used to form structural walls, floors and roofs. These will be exposed on the inside of the building and treated with pigmented polymer sheeting on the exterior.

Work is expected to finish next year.

mmmm I doubt this would have faired well if it was presented to Peter Cook in a student crit.

Peter is very talented but he should stop working with his former students who cannot touch the great man but dilute his work.
