Penoyre & Prasad bags planning for latest South Kilburn housing scheme

Penoyre & Prasad Architects has won the go-ahead for this 226-home scheme in South Kilburn, the latest in a series of innovative housing schemes in the north London area by big-name architects

Approved by Brent Council’s planning committee, the local authority-backed, ‘high-density’ Peel Precinct development features seven new buildings, including a landmark 16-storey tower.

The mixed-use development in the heart of the South Kilburn regeneration programme will create 184 homes and 42 affordable and social rented flats together with shops, a medical centre, a pharmacy and a café.

Penoyre & Prasad’s scheme sits close to Alison Brooks Architects’ Ely Court scheme – the only UK finalist chosen for the 2017 Mies van der Rohe Award – and projects by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, SimpsonHaugh and Partners, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, PRP and Erect Architecture (see below).

Mark Rowe, partner at Penoyre & Prasad, said: ‘We are extremely pleased not only to have secured the permission for this ambitious, high-density scheme, but to do so with such strong support for the proposals from both officers and the GLA.

’This has been achieved through a high degree of engagement from day one, working closely with the South Kilburn Regeneration team; building upon the fantastic work they have been doing in the area over recent years, including their demonstrable commitment to high-quality architecture.’

Penoyre & Prasad is working with East Architecture, Price & Myers and XCO2.

The scheme is secheduled to complete in 2021.

  • When will Architects Journal run an article based on the experiences of those who live in South Kilburn rather than the dreams of architects?

  • We already know a good deal about one experience of those who live in South Kilburn - the sudden and illegal demolition of the (popular, attractive and architecturally valuable) local pub, the Carlton Tavern, by a spiv property speculator with an architect in tow.
His appeal against an enforcement order was thrown out, so this year should see the start of 'brick by brick' reconstruction - but don't count on it.
