Housing association Peabody has been brought in to deliver Patel Taylor’s 386-home affordable housing scheme within the huge revamp of Battersea Power Station

The developer behind the major redevelopment of the London landmark has revealed that it will partner with the housing association on the latest slice of the scheme.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan last year said he was ‘furious’ with Wandsworth Council for allowing the Battersea Power Station Development Company to slash the number of affordable homes proposed for the site. The company is currently committed to deliver just these 386 homes – down from 636 – with a review to take place nearer completion to confirm the final number.

Patel Taylor published designs in 2015 of a 374-home scheme drawn up with JTP for the site.

Preliminary works on the slightly enlarged scheme are due to begin this year, with completion expected by 2020.

A statement from Peabody said the new buildings – ranging from one to four-bedrooms – would ‘echo the style of London’s grand redbrick mansion blocks’.

All the homes will have private outdoor space and 98 per cent will be dual aspect. They will be available through a mix of shared ownership and affordable rent.

The scheme is expected to include a £13 million NHS medical centre, as well as workspaces for start-up businesses.

Peabody chief executive Brendan Sarsfield said: ‘The regeneration of Battersea Power Station is an iconic scheme for the capital which we are pleased to be a part of.

‘These top-quality, genuinely affordable homes will be on the doorstep of the new Northern Line tube station, making it a hugely desirable place to live and work. The traditional mansion block designs, with a courtyard and spaces for children to play, will be a great addition to the Nine Elms neighbourhood.’ 

BPSDC has previously insisted its long-term aim remained to deliver 15 per cent affordable housing as part of the £8 billion project.
