Ollier Smurthwaite wins go-ahead for Manchester scheme

Emerging firm Ollier Smuthwaite Architects has won planning for a new mixed-use scheme in Castlefield, on the edge of Manchester city centre

The practice’s 11-storey scheme includes ground floor retail space for local artisans, a co-working space at the first floor and 86 one, two and three-bedroom apartments above.

The building features a communal roof terrace with urban beehives, allotments, BBQs, picnic areas and grassed lawns.

The 7,970m² scheme reinstates the historical church street and opens up views to the nearby listed St George’s Church which is now apartments.

The project is the third phase in the Manchester-based studio’s larger masterplan for the area.

Work is set to start on site in July this year.

Architect’s view

’The building is made up of three main components which respond to specific site conditions whilst expressing the functions of the building whilst breaking down its mass. The first component to the front elevation is 11 storeys tall in red brick and has a tripartite proportion which references other historical buildings along Chester Road.

’The second component on the rear elevation steps down to nine storeys and is clad in profiled metal cladding referencing the industrial history of the site with full width recessed balconies and external storage space. The third component on the rear elevation is two storeys tall in common brickwork containing parking and plant and providing a connection with the conservation area behind.’
