Nineteen projects shortlisted for RIBA South West Awards

  • Comment

Schools, colleges and university buildings dominate the RIBA South West and Wessex Awards shortlist, which was unveiled today

A total of five education schemes made the shortlist – including a research building for the University of Exeter by Hawkins\Brown; a student union building for the University of Bristol by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios; and design studios for Arts University Bournemouth by Design Engine Architects.

They are joined by a refurbishment and extension to the Somerset College School of Art, Taunton, by Stride Treglown and a new music building with recital hall for Wells Cathedral School by Eric Parry Architects.

The buildings vying for the RIBA’s regional gongs include a laboratory and sports hangar for Dyson by WilkinsonEyre.

Other shortlisted schemes include a treetop walkway by Glenn Howells Architects; a tree management centre by Invisible Studio; the Wapping Wharf development in Bristol by Alex French Architects; and a private house by Mole Architects.

RIBA South West regional director Jon Watkins said ‘RIBA Awards always bring out the best in local and national architects across our vast region, and this year’s shortlist offers quality, diversity of type and scale, excellence in design, and lots of delight.’

The winners will be announced at an evening event at the Harbour Hotel Bristol on 23 May.

Regional winners will then be put forward for the RIBA National Awards, with the successful recipients announced in July. Those collecting national awards will then be considered for the RIBA Stirling Prize.
