Niall McLaughlin Architects has won the competition to design student flats and a sports pavilion at Oxford University’s Balliol College

The scheme is the latest in a series of commissions for the University of Oxford by the practice, which has previously worked on projects for Somerville College and St Cross College (AJ 04.08.14).

McLaughlin’s proposed new development at Balliol increase and upgrade the college’s undergraduate and graduate student accommodation.

A spokesperson for the firm said: ‘The commission gives the practice the opportunity to revisit the design of the student room cluster and create a series of buildings arranged around quadrangles and gardens.’

Practice founder Niall Mclaughlin received more good news this week after being named a Royal Designer for Industry, the highest accolade for designers in the UK.

Awarded by the Royal Society of Arts, only 200 designers can hold the title at any one time. Among the architects currently holding the title are David Chipperfield, Peter Clegg, Edward Cullinan, Norman Foster, Eva Jiricna, John Pawson, Alan Stanton, Sarah Wigglesworth and Paul Williams.
