[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + PROJECT DATA] MW Architects has completed the 530m² refurbishment and extension of this four-storey Victorian house in Hampstead, London
The house has been extended with a 50m² extension to the rear housing a playroom, a utility room, and a wine cellar. The £1.5million project included reconfiguring the existing home to house a number of bedroom suites, four children’s bedrooms and a large bathroom with the roofspace converted into a playroom.
A new garden room has also been added to the rear of the home, making use of the new permitted development rights.
The architects’ view
‘The centrepiece of our conversion is a sculptural helical staircase. Both smaller and structurally lighter than the original wall-hugging stair, it frees up space to the rear of the ground floor allowing easy circulation between rooms, and improving daylight throughout the house. To the left is a formal living and dining room; to the right a family kitchen/diner.
‘Our clients were drawn to the building’s size, style and location. Although the Victorian room proportions were largely intact, the property was in a state of advanced dilapidation so we needed to build their confidence in our vision of the house’s potential.
‘The challenge was to design a family home that fulfilled the clients’ needs and aspirations while retaining as much of the original character as possible.
‘Through rigorous space planning, we set out to open up the circulation at ground level, while a full-width lower-ground floor extension is home to a large play area and ‘party room’.’
