Morrow + Lorraine wins go-ahead for Jurassic Coast holiday homes

Morrow + Lorraine Architects has won planning for a £2million holiday home development on the Isle of Portland, Dorset

ARCHITECT’S VIEW • PROJECT DATA

Nestled between two listed castles, the 1,888m2 site lies on the UNESCO World Heritage coastline overlooking the English Channel.

According to the practice, the five homes feature craggy ‘groin-like’ walls and are a ‘fluid continuation of the grounds of Pennsylvania Castle’.

Each of the two-bedroom houses is accessed from a narrow pathway to the rear, which runs along the boundary of the castle.

The homes all feature ‘through’ kitchens, linking the inside to outside with a continuous stone floor that joins the dining space with an external courtyard.

The scheme is set to complete in March 2017.

Architect’s view

Each of the groin walls is rotated two degrees from the next, producing a plan form that opens out slightly towards the sea.

This enables each section of glazing to be at a different angle to all other sections of glazing, reducing reflections from sea views.

The change in angle is utilised in the circulation hallway, entering into a narrow tall space, which widens out towards the sea, retaining ‘square’ rooms to either side.
