Minimalist Scottish home wins 2016 Passivhaus Award

  • Comment

The winners of the 2016 UK Passivhaus Awards have been revealed

This year’s awards recognised houses designed to the stringent energy standard in two categories – urban and rural.

HLM’s Passivhaus in the Scotland Highlands – one of the most northerly certified Passivhaus schemes in the UK – was crowned the winner of the rural category at an awards ceremony held in London last week.

The white rendered three-bedroom home, named Tigh na Croit, beat schemes by the Green Building Store, Parsons + Whittley Architects, and Gresford Architects to win the prize.

The urban category was won by Tectonics’ zinc-clad two-storey home in a conservation area in Hackney, East London.

The 100m2 two-storey house has been built on an infill site and due to planning regulations was required to be set half a level down from the street.

It saw off competition from a brick house in York by Anne Thorne Architects and a sunken house in Chiswick by RDA Architects.
