McDowell + Benedetti gets go-ahead for £11.5m Hull Bridge

McDowell + Benedetti has won planning for a £11.5 million new bridge in Hull - its second bridge scheme in the city’s centre

The footbridge is being delivered as an early phase of a major project by Highways England to upgrade the A63.

It will span over the A63 and will re-connect Hull’s city centre, Old Town and Princes Quay areas with the marina, fruit market, and Humber dock to the south.

The bridge’s landscaped approaches have been designed as a series of public spaces providing views of the historic town and Humber.

The deck of the bridge will be suspended from a steel hybrid arched-shell structure which also acts as a canopy providing shelter for those using the crossing.

The project bridge follows on the back of the practice’s Scale Lane swing bridge which the firm finally completed in 2013.

Work is set to start on the new bridge in January and the bridge is due to open during Hull’s UK City of Culture celebrations in 2017.
