Newly formed Matter Architecture has won planning for a £460k nursery and community centre in South London
The job was originally won by Roland Karthaus’ practice Karthaus Design, but was later taken on by Matter Architecture when Karthaus joined forces with Jonathan McDowell after McDowell+Benedetti split earlier this year.
The 172m2 family centre sits on the edge of Clapham Common within Metropolitan Open Land and replaces an existing building on the site.
The scheme will provide a nursery for children with special educational needs and a resource centre for families using the common.
Built from cross-laminated timber, the building’s form has been designed to open up views across the common.
The project is set to start on site in February 2017 and is expected to complete in August 2017.
