Manser’s Chesterfield cancer unit takes top honours in RIBA East Midlands region

  • Comment

The Manser Practice’s NGS Macmillan Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital has been named the RIBA’s building of the year 2018 in the East Midlands

As well as picking up the top prize and an RIBA Regional Award, the 2,140m² purpose-built cancer unit also won plaudits for its client and its project architect, Guy Barlow (see below).

Less than half of the 15 projects in contention for the East Midlands gongs went on to win regional accolades, with neither of maber’s shortlisted schemes taking home awards (see AJ 28.03.18)

However, there was regional recognition for BDP’s One Angel Square, which was sold for £63 million by its cash-strapped owner-now-tenant, Northamptonshire County Council, in April.

The Fairhursts Design Group’s second attempt at building the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratories in Nottingham also bagged a regional prize. The project was resubmitted after it missed out on an award last year (see AJ 22.03.17). The scheme is an identical £23 million rebuild of a partially completed timber frame structure which burned down during construction in 2014.

Regional jury chair Mike Wilson-MacCormack from Benoy said: ’Blurring boundaries is a notable theme in many projects submitted during 2018. In larger buildings which accommodate multiple teams and departments, spatial organisation skilfully merges more structured zones with breakout areas and gathering spaces to encourage openness and collaboration. Particularly within teaching and research facilities, there is a notable visual transparency such that activities are clearly seen and celebrated.

’In many instances this is used to great effect around vertical organising spaces and atria, which often contain a visual complexity of dramatic forms and graphic schema. Many smaller-scale projects are also successful in manipulating space and light to merge different functions and create delightful and unexpected experiences.’

The regional winners will now be considered for RIBA National Awards, which will be announced on 21 June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning buildings.
