Tower Hamlets has approved plans by Make for a 53-storey, 400-home tower on the Isle of Dogs, east London
The Meridian Gate scheme designed by the winner of the 2014 AJ100 Practice of the Year award include office space and new public realm at the base of the skyscraper featuring cafés, public gardens, and a children’s play area.
In its planning committee report the authority described the skyscraper in the Marsh Wall area next to West India Docks as ‘an elegant tower which makes a positive contribution to the skyline’.
Under the s106 agreement, the authority expects project backers LBS Properties and Meridian Property Holdings to cough up nearly £3.25million towards a raft of local initiatives.
Frank Filskow, Make partner and lead project architect said the tower responded to the ‘council’s aspirations within the developing South Quay Masterplan’ and that its ‘slender design maximised the opportunity to provide a significant new park for residents and the local community.’
