Amanda Levete Architects (AL_A) is among four teams competing for a major renewal of public realm around the Eiffel Tower in Paris
The practice, working with UK landscape architect Gross.Max, was selected from 42 entries to participate in the next phase of the 10-month design contest backed by Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo.
Also shortlisted are UK landscape architect Gustafson Porter + Bowman; France’s Agence Ter with Italy’s Carlo Ratti Associati and local practice Explorations Architecture; and Paris-based Koz architectes.
The competition, which launched earlier this year, is looking for a design that boosts safety, improves the tourist experience and reduces queuing around the 324m-tall wrought-iron tower, which is the most-visited paid monument in the world.
The project is part of a wider £265 million overhaul of the tower, due to complete by 2032. The public realm revamp is expected to complete in 2023 in time for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The public realm upgrade covers a 54ha site stretching from either side of the River Seine, between the Trocadéro and the Military Academy, and along the river embankments between Bir-Hakeim and Alma Bridges.
The project aims to the enhance the tower’s architectural quality, upgrade the pedestrian experience at the base of the tower, improve existing connections across the site and overhaul the circulation of the surrounding public transport, buses, boats and cars.
Commenting on the announcement, AL_A director Amanda Levete said: ‘The Tour Eiffel is a national symbol etched into a global consciousness and its iconography is understood across generations and cultures.
‘We are honoured to be given the opportunity to engage with the City of Paris to reimagine and improve the experience for everyone of Paris’s most iconic and beloved landmark.’
The tower is France’s second tallest structure after Foster + Partners’ Millau Viaduct.
