LDN big winner as RIBA Yorkshire hands regional awards to seven projects

LDN’s revamp of The Piece Hall in Halifax has cleaned up at the RIBA Yorkshire awards, taking home a trio of the special category prizes, including the region’s Building of the Year award

The practice’s transformation and restoration of the the Grade I-listed 18th century cloth hall, which was also handed the Conservation of the Year title, was among seven RIBA regional award winners announced at a ceremony in York last night.

LDN Architects’ Mark Hopton, who worked on the £19 million scheme, walked away with the RIBA Yorkshire Project Architect of the Year award.

Chosen from a shortlist of 13 projects, there were also regional gongs for Leeds-based Group Ginger, Bond Bryan, Cartwright Pickard, Tonkin Liu, and Evans Vettori, whose Square Chapel Arts Centre next door to the Piece Hall finally completed last year after more than a decade on the drawing board.

Chair of the judging panel Roger Hawkins of Hawkins\Brown said: ‘There’s a huge diversity in the range of award-winners this year, from a humble, but beautifully designed bird hide, nestled four miles down a single-track road in Driffield, to a sympathetically restored and conserved majestic Piece Hall and local library in Halifax, showing that good architecture is possible on many different scales.

’It’s also great to see so many regional practices on this year’s list.’

All the regional award winners will now be put forward for the RIBA National Awards, the winners of which will be announced on 21 June. National award-winners will then be considered for the RIBA Stirling Prize, which is announced in October.
