Plans by Landolt + Brown have been submitted for the regeneration of White Hart Lane overground station in Tottenham, north London
The scheme, backed by the Greater London Authority (GLA), is a part of a wider 20-year regeneration project in Tottenham, which was marked as one of the mayor of London’s priority areas.
Proposals include creating a new station entrance on Love Lane, a station forecourt, more cycle parking, two lifts providing step-free access, and a new station entrance on Penshurst Road. Love Lane and Penshurst Road will also be connected, giving travellers direct access.
Landolt + Brown co-founder Adam Brown said: ‘The GLA, TfL and Haringey [Council] have worked collaboratively with us in establishing a design they feel sets a high standard and has, we hope, the support of local folk, which is very important.’
Brown added that the design, which includes exposing the brickwork on six railway arches, is an ‘architectural response’ to the site’s history. ‘We’ve tried to develop something that’s super-local,’ he said. ‘All its architecture comes from the history of the site and what used to be made in Tottenham but what isn’t made anymore.’
Work is scheduled to start on site next year.
The tube station revamp comes in tandem with the redevelopment of nearby White Hart Lane stadium – home of Premiership football club Tottenham Hotspur. The £400 million project by Populous will create a new stadium, increasing capacity from 36,000 to 61,000. The stadium is set to be completed by summer 2018, and it is expected White Hart Lane station will open soon afterwards.
By 2025, the regeneration project in Tottenham plans to deliver over 5,000 new jobs, up to 10,000 new homes and 93,000m² of employment and commercial space.
From the outset of the design process, Landolt + Brown has sought to develop a highly place-specific design working closely with architect-trained artist Wendy Hardie, who has researched the area’s rich industrial history to develop a creative design approach, which is deep-rooted in the character and culture of the area. This has informed the approach to both appearance and materials. In a part of London likely to go through substantial change and wide scale redevelopment in the years to come, the station project, which includes the fine historic railway structures, is uniquely positioned to create a direct link with Tottenham’s rich but lost history of growing and making. In particular, several historic ‘themes’ have emerged and each has a specific impact on the character and materials proposed for the new buildings.
The new station building requires six railway arches to be enclosed, and the brickwork is being exposed as a key component of the design. The layout deliberately pulls stairs and circulation components away from the brickwork, and the roof line floats above the parapet to allow light and space around the arches, creating a unique and richly textured interior for the station concourse. The folded form of the bays that make up the primary east elevation reinforces the relationship between the new building and the arched platform structure it sits against.
For much of the 18th and 19th centuries, this area of Tottenham was dominated by large horticultural greenhouses. Great shallow-pitched, repeating glass roofs housed flowers and vegetables bound for Covent Garden each morning, and one of England’s largest commercial greenhouse manufacturers, Duncan Tucker, was also located in North Tottenham. The folded form of the east elevation deliberately reflects the shallow pitches of these commercial greenhouse roofs, and the use of simple, lapped glazing on the upper sections of the station’s primary elevation is deliberately intended to reflect the visual character of the greenhouses that once dominated the area.
