Shoreditch-based Kyson has won the go-ahead from Hackney Council for this 5,266m² hotel on the practice’s doorstep in east London

The 10-storey scheme for the boutique hotel operator Blakes Hotel Group will replace the existing 1980s red brick Satellite House on the corner of Corsham Street and Bache’s Street.

Work is due to start on site early next year and to complete towards the end of 2018.

Architect’s view

The hotel sits within an architectural environment that distils the character of the area’s rapidly evolving urban landscape and creative community.

Juxtaposed within this patchwork landscape, the form of the building is conceived through a series of volumes that combine as both a sculptural composition when viewed independently and one that responds and mediates when set within its complex urban environment.

A careful yet dramatic intervention, the materiality of the building employs a palette of hand-made brick, concrete and steel, creating a strong industrial aesthetic that pays homage to the industrial heritage of the area. It does so, however, with a firmly modern approach and resolutely minimalist intentions.
