Kyson bags sole UK place in European '40 Under 40' ranking

An awards scheme saluting Europe’s best architecture and design talent aged under 40 has listed just one UK practitioner in its 2014 tally

Scott Kyson is the sole UK entrant in the ‘Europe 40 under 40’ ranking, compiled by the Dublin-based European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

Despite its title, the listing names 54 ‘laureates’ who hail from 11 nations. This year’s roll of honour is dominated by French architects, with 34 chosen from 17 practices.

Christian K Narkiewicz-Laine, museum president of the Chicago Athenaeum, said the latest winners were ‘some of the brightest and most progressive’ architects and designers ever selected in the awards’ history.

‘Their work is highly innovative, densely imaginative, and full of a new spirit that characterises European design today,’ he said.

Kyson told AJ the practice was ‘very pleased’ to have been included in the 2014 ranking and that its selection was in recognition of ‘a body of work that has continued to evolve over the last five years’.

He added: ‘Presently, our commissions continue to match our ambition as the practice expands its portfolio in breadth and scale whilst maintaining its core principles.’

Winners submitted projects to a jury panel made up of architectural practitioners, developers, architectural journalists, educators, and critics.

They rated entires in terms of their innovation, use of the latest building technology, and ‘forward-thinking respect for green design’.
