Kier has reached a mutual agreement with the Glasgow School of Art to cancel its contract to refurbish the Mackintosh Building

According to the AJ’s sister title Construction News, a joint statement from both parties said they had agreed that there was no way the current contract could be fulfilled following the fire on 15 June that devastated Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s 1909 landmark.

Kier signed a £25 million contract in June 2016 to restore the Grade A building – a project that was being overseen by architect Page\Park – after it was badly damaged by an earlier fire in May 2014.

The restoration was due to be completed next January, but a fire that broke out on 15 June destroyed much of the building.

Kier has defended the fire safety strategy it employed at the site, which it said included a 24-hour patrol along with heat and smoke detection systems.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Last week a survey by Glasgow City Council ‘revealed more substantial movement in the walls of the building than [had been] previously thought’ and that some were at risk of sudden collapse.

Parts of the building will be dismantled over the next few days.

  • Given the ten years of severe problems with Kier's Dumfries Leisure Centre, and the Mack's fate while in their care, is the Burrell at risk in their hands?
