Joseph Rykwert wins Gold Medal

  • Comment

The presentation of the 2014 Royal Gold Medal to Joseph Rykwert elevates him to the company of just five architectural writers who have received the award

The honour represented a long-overdue vote of thanks from the profession to a historian and theorist who has done as much as any alive to shape the current discourse.

Books such as The First Moderns and The Idea of a Town illuminated the continuities between architecture’s pre-modern history and our present condition, offering a much-needed critique of the technocratic tendencies of the post-war years.

It is right that the RIBA should award the Gold Medal to writers only on rare occasions, but Rykwert is a more than deserving winner.
