Jeffrey Bell’s 23-storey Eccles tower gets the green light

Councillors have approved plans by Manchester practice Jeffrey Bell Architects for a 23-storey residential tower on the outskirts of the city

Salford City Council’s Planning and Transportation Regulatory Panel voted to grant planning consent for the block as part of a £50 million proposal for a plot on Church Street near Eccles railway station.

Backed by Silverlane Developments, the approved scheme will feature 272 apartments as well as ground-floor commercial and retail space.

Existing buildings on the 3,000m² site will be demolished, including a furniture store and smaller shops. Three interlocked blocks will be created in their place, four, six and 23 floors tall respectively.

Jeffrey Bell Architects said when submitting the plans earlier this year that Eccles was ‘likely to see a similar scale of growth to that being seen across the strategic areas of city-centre Salford, MediaCityUK and The Quays’.

The practice’s scheme features a two-storey colonnade at ground level.

A report by planning officers to the council committee said: ’The applicant has advised that the architectural character and language of the new building is drawn from relevant and important local history; textile warehouse, coal mining and engineering. Brick, masonry and metalwork with deep-set window reveals create a robust, almost “converted industrial” aesthetic.’
