Spanish practice Idom has been appointed to work on a new workspace for hi-tech firms in Leicester
The £4.3 million scheme will provide ‘grow-on’ office space for hi-tech businesses on a site next to Grimshaw’s National Space Centre and the city’s ‘Dock’ development which completed in 2013.
The scheme dubbed Dock 2 will be built on brownfield land owned by the Homes and Communities Agency.
The city council is now set to provide £150,000 to cover the project’s initial design and feasibility stage.
City mayor Peter Soulsby said: ‘Our ambition is to establish Pioneer Park as a hub for technology and knowledge-based industries, encouraging enterprise and creating jobs.
’The success of Dock, which is home to more than 40 hi-tech small businesses, and the National Space Centre, which attracts more than 250,000 visitors each year, gives us a good base on which to build.
‘Our plans for Dock 2 will be another step forward, providing flexible grow-on space for technology businesses, right next door to the thriving community at Dock.’
Javier Quintana, architectural director of Idom, said: ‘Dock 2 is a very exciting project for us to be involved in. We look forward to creating a building of which Leicester will be proud.’
