Grimbsy-based ID Architecture has revealed plans for a new house in the Lincolnshire Wolds designed to avoid views of nearby electricity pylons
The practice intends to rely on Paragraph 55 of the National Planning Policy Framework to win the go-ahead for the proposed 320m² project in rural Hatcliffe.
The planning clause allows one-off, new-build houses to be constructed in open countryside under special circumstances.
The sloping scheme, which is the firm’s second ‘country house clause’ home, has been crafted so that its windows ‘face between the pylons, rather than at them’.
Subject to planning, the project could start on site before the end of the year.
Set in a small hamlet within the Lincolnshire Chalk Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the form of this Passivhaus dwelling is developed from an investigation of the existing negative visual impact of the nearby pylons and electrical utility equipment.
The plan arrangement is oriented to take advantage of the valley views with the solar-shaded south and west window planes arranged to face between the pylons, rather than at them, ensuring that occupants will enjoy the optimum countryside outlook. The generated plan angles are also used to develop the roof form and the sloping frame to the end window.
This sloping wall plane is also applied to the east wall above the entrance creating depth and interest to the elevation and allowing incorporation of a recessed, sheltered entrance. The wall thickness required for the Passivhaus construction allows all of the windows to be punched deep into the walls, providing solar shading and a visual counterpoint to the simplicity of the built form.

As a predominantly ‘one-box’ design, the proposal is intended to display its materiality with a similarly singular aesthetic. The final proposal for materials is chosen based on those materials that: are most appropriate for the Passivhaus timber-frame construction; will achieve the clients requirements for low-maintenance and durability; will be appropriate and sensitive to the defining characteristics of the area; and that will continue to be complementary to one another as the dwelling ages and matures into its setting.
The proposals for the landscape and biodiversity enhancements have been developed to significantly enhance the immediate setting, and benefit wider habitats by adjoining with the adjacent mature tree copses forming a connected wildlife corridor. Extensive consultation with a Passivhaus consultant, Ecologist, Wolds groups, wildlife groups and the planning department have led to a rigorously designed exemplar single dwelling within the AONB.
