AJ120 practice IBI Group has won outline planning for proposals to redevelop Barnsley town centre
The multidisciplinary team from IBI has been working with Barnsley Council on the £50 million plans which aim to ‘transform and reinvigorate Barnsley’s central heart’.
The scheme includes a new market square, the extension and refurbishment of the town’s market, a new 3,000m² public library, a cinema, shops and offices.
IBI Group’s Seamus Lennon, said: ‘The regeneration of Barnsley will make a significant difference to the local people and open up the opportunity for further investment into the area.
‘Acting as architects, planners and landscape architects on this project, we are working with the council to shape a place that is attractive, accessible and characterful – making a Better Barnsley for future generations.’
Back in 2011 CZWG and Holder Matthias were appointed to work on a masterplan for the town centre drawn up by Will Alsop, but the scheme was later abandoned.
Reserved matters are now set to be prepared for each element of the scheme. The first phase – a covered market – is set to begin on site in early 2016.
