Hudson Architects picked for Great Yarmouth marketplace revamp

Hudson Architects has won a publicly tendered contract to overhaul Great Yarmouth’s historic marketplace

The Norwich-based practice topped an undisclosed shortlist to win the commission to regenerate and enhance the covered and open marketplace which dates back to the 11th century.

The £2.7 million project for Great Yarmouth Borough Council will deliver an upgraded weatherproof venue featuring 36 indoor food and retail stalls, traders welfare facilities, a market office, lighting and signage along with improved outdoor trading areas and entertainment spaces. It is set to complete in 2020.

The Norfolk resort’s market is divided into an indoor six-days-a-week venue and larger outdoor trading area used only twice a week.

Hudson’s scheme will also deliver a new ‘Big Market’, incorporating the two-day market pitches to the north and south of the existing six-day facilities, to host visiting markets, events and new stallholders. A report detailing Hudson’s proposal will be considered by the council’s policy and resources committee tomorrow (16 October).

Council leaders Graham Plant and Trevor Wainwright, said: ‘We have one of the UK’s oldest markets, and that longevity has rested on its ability to adapt over the centuries. People tell us that the market is again ready for a change. The current canopy dates to 1992 and is beyond its designed lifespan, so just carrying on with maintaining this is not an option.

‘This situation presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the community, retailers and traders to have new facilities, fit for the 21st century. While the ultimate decision is for full council, these exciting designs for Great Yarmouth have been shaped through discussions with the member working group, council officers and through wider public engagement, and they offer the potential to boost both the market and the wider town centre.’

Local artists will be invited to design patterns for the pop-up units and stall shutters as part of Hudson’s proposal.

The commission comes two years after Hudson completed a new £3.5 million architecture school at Norwich University of the Arts.
