Fresh from being named overall winner of the AJ Retrofit Awards, Warwick Hall by Acanthus Clews Architects has also won Heritage Project of the Year at the AJ Architecture Awards

This project, renovating a historic Grade II*-listed 15th century parish hall in Burford and providing a flexible community hall and spaces including meeting rooms and café, was judged to bring ‘a real new heart to the town and community’, while also being an exemplar in ‘sensitive yet innovative conservation and retrofit’.

It is particularly successful given the sensitivity of the site, with the generous new entrance entered through a Grade I-listed graveyard ‘beautifully handled’ while providing a new link between the town community and church.

The ‘excellent internal spaces – very flexible and functional’ were praised; not just the main halls but the light-filled series of connecting spaces, which allow for many types of events and innovative new uses.

The adoption of natural ventilation and a ground source heat pump makes this a highly sustainable project.

This ‘reinvention of the parish hall’ is occupied over the whole day, notably providing daytime benefit for older people,  with the café acting as a new social centre in the town.

The staff and users that the judges spoke to were ‘really happy and love the space’, their numbers on the days the judges visited bearing witness to how well the facility is used. This project brings real community benefit while enhancing and reinvigorating its historic setting.
