Heneghan Peng's Greenwich School of Architecture nears completion

Heneghan Peng’s long-awaited new School of Architecture building for the University of Greenwich is nearing completion

The final fit-out has begun on the £76million building which contains a new campus library, two lecture theatres, broadcast quality TV studios, seminar spaces and design studios.

The 17,000m² school of architecture has been designed to ‘encourage discussion, exchange and inspired learning’. At its heart is a large open-plan studio space and a ‘Crit Pit’ (pictured below), which will host debates, exhibitions and discussions.

Architect Roisin Heneghan said: ‘Our vision for Stockwell Street was to create a place where students can interact and learn from each other. This ability for the building to help the inspiration and discussion process is at the heart of the design approach.’

Heneghan Peng bagged the prized job five years ago, seeing off competition from David Chipperfield David Chipperfield, Rafael Viñoly, Allies and Morrison, Bennetts Associates, Wilkinson Eyre, and Danish practice Schmidt Hammer Lassen (AJ 11.09.09).

The building is due to open to students in September.

[FIRST LOOK] These are the first images of Heneghan Peng’s proposed new £76 million school of architecture for the University of Greenwich

The Irish practice bagged the prize project in September last year (AJ 11.09.09) ahead of David Chipperfield, Rafael Viñoly, Allies and Morrison, Bennetts Associates, Wilkinson Eyre, and Danish practice Schmidt Hammer Lassen.

The 17,000m² scheme, which is still at concept stage and has just gone out for an initial round of public consultation, will sit on on a run-down 0.64ha site between Stockwell Street, Nevada Street and King William Walk, in Greenwich, London

According to the university, the proposals for the new library and School of Architecture & Construction (SoAC) will reflect the fine grain of the surrounding terrace houses.

A spokesman said: ‘The grain of narrow and wide bands structure the site: narrow bands containing courtyards, service & cores, wide bands provide the teaching and learning spaces. The grain is further drawn through to the street to create a permeable streetscape.

‘The library is located to the north establishing a connection to the main university campus in the Old Royal Naval College.’

A cafe and exhibition spaces will open onto Stockwell Street with the main entrance positioned at the corner opposite Hawksmoor’s St. Alfege Church - ‘a slight setback creating a threshold’.

Studio space occupies the entire first floor with seminar rooms ‘suspended in the space’ between the courtyards.

The library is organised with a split level section creating a space that visually & spatially interconnects the diverse activities within.

A planning application is expected to be submitted in the autumn when there will be further public consultation.

The exhibition in Room 015, Ground Floor, Queen Mary Court, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, will run from Thursday, July 1 until Friday, July 9.
