Haptic and Nordic among finalists for Norwegian government HQ

Haptic Architects has been shortlisted for a new 150,000m² government complex in central Oslo

The London and Oslo-based practice is part of a team led by Norwegian big hitter Nordic Office of Architecture which has been selected to compete for the prestigious commission.

Organised by Norway’s state building agency (Statsbygg) – the competition sought proposals for a new 150,000m² government quarter in the Regjeringskvartalet area of the historic capital city.

The large-scale regeneration – which will modernise three existing structures and deliver six new buildings – comes five years after the district was targeted by a terrorist bomb.

The device – detonated by Anders Behring Breivik on 22nd July 2011 – killed eight people and injured more than 200 others. Several buildings in the area were also heavily damaged.

The reconstruction project will deliver around 5,700 workplaces and is expected to be one of the most extensive and complex architectural schemes ever undertaken in Oslo. Nordic previously completed a feasibility study for the project (pictured).

Earlier this year Haptic won an international competition for a new 12,000m² elderly housing scheme in historic Drøbak, Norway.

The studio’s 20ha cancer research hub in south London – developed with Nordic – was also approved earlier this month.
